Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta starrer Yash Chopra's romantic film 'Veer Zara' is a blockbuster film in Hindi cinema. This beautiful story of relationships and feelings divided by borders was taken by the audience. Along with the performance of its cast in the film and excellent direction by Yash Chopra, its music captivated the people. Yes, the music of 'Veer Zara' is unmatched. The music was a one-of-a-kind experiment in Hindi cinema as it was the first time that a late composer's past songs were included in the original music of a film after his departure.
This music by Late Madan Mohan made the biggest contribution in making the film a success. Those who have known Yash Chopra closely know that he loved the song 'Tere Liye' from the film so much that he kept it as his ringtone till his last breath.
Yash Chopra wanted to use the music of the bygone era in this film and for this he also held long meetings with different musicians but it did not work out. Incidentally, Madan Mohan's son Sanjeev Kohli, who was then working as CEO of Yash Raj Films, mentioned to Yash ji that his late father had left some absolutely untouched tunes and that his legacy was kept very well by the family members. Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra heard those tunes and immediately decided that the music of Ustad Madan Mohan would be used in 'Veer Zara'.
In his book Veer Zara, The Memoirs of a Love Legend, Sanjeev Kohli writes, “Veer-Zaara was my dream come true, a dream I never thought would ever turn into reality. When my father musician late Madan Mohan passed away in 1975, he was just 51 years old. The era considered him to be a great musician but big banners, movies with big stars and popular awards never came in his bag. In fact, this reality kept pricking his heart like an arrow. Their tapes were kept safe, however over the years they were getting damaged and due to technological advances they would soon become useless.”
He goes on to say, “It was in 2003, one day Yash ji told me that after six years he has decided to direct a film, but it is a film which needs music of the bygone era, A music that is completely free from the western influences that have penetrated today. It simply passed out of my mouth that I had some tapes of bygone melody lying around, but I hadn't listened to them for 28 years. He seemed excited by this suggestion and was quite surprised that I had never mentioned it before! His son Aditya Chopra was writing the script of this new film. Adi is a person living in the present and he needed songs that were commercially accepted. Only Yash ji and Adi knew what they wanted."
